Jepson Museum

Savannah, GA

Date

2019-2021

Project type

Installation

Folklore is the 2019 Iteration of Telfair Museums' annual Boxed In/Break Out project, a museum-sponsored opportunity that invites Savannah artists to propose an original installation of artwork to invigorate six large windows along the east side of the Jepson Center on Barnard Street. Pope's installation consists of six large-scale paper quilts centered around Kodachrome slides, filled with stories of the past that evoke a comforting sense of nostalgia.

Each quilt consists of a minimum of 96 blocks made up of over 3,000 hand-cut pieces with varying color schemes and patterns that focus on specific chapters in the family's history. The memories, once hidden, come alive at different times of the day based on the reflection of the sun reflecting through the Jepson Center's east-facing windows and back-lighting which illuminates the slides at night.
